
The grinding mill was some miles away, behind the mountain. My mother would prepare for the trip quite well. She would first go into the granary, a thatched hut used for storing grain and take some maize using a battered and wasted 20 litre metal container. Winnowing would come next, where she would use a winnowing basket (rusero) in order to remove the chaff… After all was done, we would then carry the tied sacks of maize on our heads to the grinding mill..
